Harry D. Shafer was born on January 23, 1923. He was the son of Job Ernest Shafer and Thelma Beam Shafer. He served in the 602nd Bomber Squadron, 398th Bomb Group, as a Corporal and Ball Turret Gunner of a B-17 Flying Fortress during World War II.
Cpl Shafer was tragically killed on May 8, 1944, in a non-combat accident at Nuthampstead Airfield (Station 131) in England. According to records from the 398th Bomb Group Memorial Association, the fatal incident occurred when a bomb was accidentally dropped on base, leading to his death. He is now buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Versailles, Darke County, Ohio, USA. Harry D. Shafer's name is inscribed on the Anstey Window Memorial in Panel 2 (center), on Butterfly 6, in the top left wing (section C).
