Arnold Michael Volkay was born on November 23, 1919, in Trauger, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Michael Volkay and Susan Ocelvany Volkay. He served in the 602nd Bomber Squadron, 398th Bomb Group, as a Second Lieutenant and Co-Pilot of B-17 #42-102543 during World War II.
On October 28, 1944, during its 54th mission targeting Münster, Germany, the aircraft was struck by enemy flak over the target area. The damage led to the aircraft crashing near Uelsen, in the Bentheim region of Germany. Of the crew, two were killed in action, while seven members survived and were taken as prisoners of war.
