Edwin Montgomery Wallace was born on April 28, 1908, in Saint Simons Island, Glynn County, Georgia. He was the son of Edward Montgomery Wallace and Thora Pederson Wallace. He served in the 601st Bomber Squadron, 398th Bomb Group, Heavy, as a Master Sergeant and Crew Chief during World War II.
On January 10, 1945, at RAF Nuthampstead in England, during a snowstorm, B-17 Flying Fortress #44-8476 was attempting to take off for a mission to Ostheim, Germany. Midway through its takeoff roll, the aircraft veered off the runway and collided with a weapons carrier truck, resulting in MSGT Wallace's death. Despite the hazardous weather conditions, the mission was not canceled, leading to multiple accidents that morning.
MSgt Wallace is now buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial, Coton, South Cambridgeshire District, Cambridgeshire, England. Edwin M. Wallace's name is inscribed on the Anstey Window Memorial in Panel 2 (center), on Butterfly 8, in the top right wing (section B).
