Maj. Gen. Stanley Tanner Wray, a native of Muncie and a decorated general who served in World War II, died last Saturday in Wilford Hall Medical
Center, San Antonio, Texas. He would have been 79
last Monday. He retired from the Air Force in 1962, after having received numerous medals and commendations for
bravery and service. Gen. Wray graduated second in his class of 275 at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1932. He
also had attended Cornell University. In 1942-43, Gen. Wray commanded the 91st Bomber Group based at Bassingbourne, England. He was awarded the British Distinguished Flying Cross in 1943 and also was the recipient of the Victoria Flying
Cross. Gen. Wray also was in the occupation of post-war Germany and commanded an air wing of 60 B-29 bombers on the Berlin Air Lift in 1950. Later, he was in charge of construction of the Dewline in Northern
Canada. As commander of Wright Air Development Center, Dayton, Ohio, Gen. Wray was responsible for the X-15
and other major Air Force test programs.
