Eugene Allen Romig was born on April 20, 1918, in Byesville, Guernsey County, Ohio. He was the son of Clement Eugene Romig and Ethel G. Myer Romig. He was married to Louise Willard Hubbard Romig. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1939. Upon arrival in the European Theater of Operations in October 1942, he assumed command of a squadron before being promoted to lead the 303rd Bomb Group as one of the youngest heavy bomber group commanders in the region.
By January 1944, at just 25 years old, he was noted in press reports as the youngest officer commanding the 351st Bomber Group. Over his combat tour, Romig flew at least 15 missions and was honored with key decorations. Under his command, the 303rd Group performed crucial bombing operations and, as their leader, Romig often led formations himself. Beyond his wartime role, he continued broader service connected to other units such as the 351st Bomb Group and the 94th Combat Bomb Wing.
Col Romig passed away on October 17, 1992, and is now buried in the Saint Matthews Episcopal Church Columbarium, Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles County, California, USA.
