John Smith Patterson was born in South Carolina. He entered naval service on April 18, 1833. He served in the US Navy as a Passed Midshipman, serving as Acting Master, and was assigned to the USS Congress.
Patterson was assassinated on the night of October 28, 1842, in Mahon, Menorca, while returning to his ship during the period when the U.S. maintained a naval presence in the Mediterranean, as part of its early-to-mid 19th century Mediterranean Squadron. He suffered three knife wounds, one of which pierced his heart, causing instant death. The murder appeared unprovoked, and the perpetrator was never found despite efforts by local authorities. He is now buried in the Cementerio Anglo Americano, Maó-Mahón, Provincia de Islas Baleares, Baleares, Spain.
