Leland Robert Rhoads was born on December 7, 1898, in Shipman, Macoupin County, Illinois. He was the son of Walter Anderson Rhoads and Sarah Elizabeth Rhoads Rhoads. He served in Company G, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War I.
PFC Rhoads died from his wounds received in battle on April 28, 1918, in France. He is now buried in the Somme American Cemetery and Memorial, Bony, Departement de l'Aisne, Picardie, France.
