Donald David Gilmore was born on July 17, 1921, in Freeborn, Freeborn County, Minnesota. He was the son of Ansel Epenetus Gilmore and Bertha Louisa Scoville Gilmore. He enlisted in the service in 1942. He served in the 338th Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group, as a First Lieutenant and Pilot of P-51 Mustang #44-13360 during World War II.
On August 13, 1944, the aircraft was downed over France during a bombing and strafing mission aimed at Rouen. It had taken off from Station 159 in Wormingford, Essex, UK, and was struck by anti-aircraft fire (flak) at 13:15. The crash site was located approximately 2 kilometers southwest of Sérans in the Oise department, roughly 24 kilometers northwest of Pontoise. Although 1st Lt. Samuel E. Hansard, an eyewitness, placed the incident southwest of Gisors, all other entries in the mission report identify Sérans as the confirmed location of the crash.
