Robert William Slack was born on February 21, 1921, in Burley, Cassia County, Idaho. He was the son of Lester F. Slack and Lulu Belle Holloway Slack. He served in the 714th Bomb Squadron, 448th Bomb Group, Heavy, as a Sergeant and Tail Gunner of B-24 #42-50344 nicknamed "Red Sox" during World War II.

On June 27, 1944, the "Red Sox" was shot down while on a bombing mission aimed at the Creil aerodrome and the marshaling yard at Creil Petit-Thérain in France’s Oise department. The aircraft departed Station 146 in Seething, Norfolk, UK, at 15:50. Around 18:40, while flying near the commune of Vez—between Les Prouhérons and the Chemin de la Procession, approximately 6 kilometers west of Villers-Cotterêts—it was hit by anti-aircraft fire between its first and second engines. The entire crew managed to bail out before the aircraft went down.

Sgt Slack was Killed in Action after being hit by ground fire while descending by parachute. He is now buried in the Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial, Epinal, Departement des Vosges, Lorraine, France.
