John Barr Stewart Jr. was born in 1919, in Passaic County, New Jersey. He was the son of John Barr Stewart Sr. He served in the 396th Fighter Squadron, 368th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot in P-47 Thunderbolt #42-76407 during World War II.

On August 28, 1944, the aircraft went down in France during a low-level strafing mission. It had departed from Advanced Landing Ground A-40 in Chartres and, at around 08:20, struck trees while making a strafing run near Meaux. The impact occurred approximately 1.5 kilometers south of Ivors, where the aircraft crashed and exploded.

2Lt Stewart was Killed in Action and is now buried in the Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial, Epinal, Departement des Vosges, Lorraine, France.
