Myer Rolnick Winkelman was born on August 16, 1921, in Oklahoma. He was the son of William Winkelman and Fannie Lee Adams Winkelman. He served in the 504th Fighter Squadron, 339th Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot of P-51 Mustang D-5-NA #44-13521 during World War II.
On August 13, 1944, the aircraft crash-landed near St-Just-en-Chaussée, about 25 kilometers northeast of Beauvais in the Oise department of France. It had departed from Station 378 at Fowlmere, Cambridgeshire, UK, for a bombing and strafing mission targeting Beauvais. At approximately 19:30, the aircraft was reportedly struck on the wing by a bomb accidentally released from another P-51. A crash was reported near Feuquières, though it was not witnessed firsthand. The aircraft, which was regularly piloted by Captain Bradford V. Stevens, was later said to have been recovered and restored.
2Lt Winkelman was Killed in Action and is now buried in the Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial, Epinal, Departement des Vosges, Lorraine, France.
