Wilfred Henry Bland was born on August 28, 1897, in Blackpool, Blackpool Unitary Authority, Lancashire, England. He was the son of John F. Bland, who immigrated and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1907, and Rose L. Bland, who immigrated and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1913. He served in the 1st Tunnelling Company, Canadian Engineers, as a Sapper during World War I.
