Rexford Benjamin Hurlbert was born on May 29, 1895, in Scranton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of William Benjamin Hurlbert and Elizabeth 'Bessie' Hurlbert. He was a fireman before enlisting in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in January 1915. He served in the 2nd Battalion, Canadian Infantry, as a Private during World War I.
Pvt Hurlbert was Killed in Action on November 29, 1915, in Belgium. He is now buried in the R.E. Farm Cemetery, Wytschaete, Arrondissement Ieper, West Flanders, Belgium.
