Gustav Hermann Kissel was born on March 3, 1895, in the District of Columbia. He was the son of Rudolph H. Kissel and Caroline Morgan Kissel. He graduated from Harvard University. He joined the U.S. Air Service and trained in England due to shortages in the U.S. He served in the Aviation Section, Signal Reserve Corps, as a First Lieutenant during World War I.

On April 12, 1918, during his first mission, his squadron was outnumbered by enemy aircraft, and his plane was shot down. 1Lt Kissel was Killed in Action and is now buried in Pont-du-Hem Military Cemetery, La Gorgue, Departement du Nord, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France. He also has a cenotaph in the Old Village Cemetery, Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA.
