Leonard Donald Holder Jr. was born on January 19, 1944, in San Antonio, Texas. He is a retired lieutenant general in the United States Army who served as Commandant of the United States Army Command and General Staff College from July 19, 1995, to August 7, 1997. As a colonel, he commanded the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment during Operation Desert Storm, where his unit played a key role in the Battle of 73 Easting. Under his leadership, the regiment executed the VII Corps’ “left hook” maneuver, engaging and defeating elements of the Iraqi Republican Guard’s Tawakalna Division, which enabled the 1st and 3rd Armored Divisions to advance. In addition to his combat leadership, Holder was instrumental in developing Field Manual 100-5, shaping the AirLand Battle doctrine that replaced Active Defense and emphasized rapid decision-making and coordinated strikes against enemy forces. He was later inducted into the Fort Leavenworth Hall of Fame.
