Michael “Mike” Kobbe served as the commander of the Second Squadron, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment (2nd ACR), from September 1989 to September 1991, leading his unit during Operation Desert Storm and the Battle of 73 Easting. As squadron commander, Kobbe directed reconnaissance and combat operations as part of the VII Corps’ advance into Iraq, where the 2nd ACR acted as a forward screening force to locate and engage elements of the Iraqi Republican Guard. During the battle on February 26, 1991, his squadron played a critical role in the destruction of Iraqi armored forces, with the 2nd Squadron alone accounting for dozens of enemy tanks and vehicles destroyed. When intense fighting threatened to overwhelm forward units, Kobbe reinforced engaged troops by committing additional armored elements, helping sustain momentum and secure victory. His leadership contributed significantly to the regiment’s success in one of the largest tank battles of the Gulf War, for which the 2nd ACR later received the Valorous Unit Award.
