Dan Miller served as the commander of Iron Troop (I Troop), 3rd Squadron, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment during Operation Desert Storm, where he led his unit in combat at the Battle of 73 Easting. During the engagement on February 26, 1991, Miller directed his troop in a series of aggressive armored attacks against Iraqi Republican Guard forces. After coming under fire while maneuvering north, he rapidly returned fire, silenced enemy resistance, and advanced toward the 70 Easting line. There, his unit engaged entrenched Iraqi T-72 tanks, destroying multiple enemy vehicles and continuing the attack through successive defensive positions. Under his leadership, Iron Troop not only destroyed at least sixteen tanks in one engagement but also located and eliminated an Iraqi command post, contributing significantly to the collapse of enemy defenses. His actions exemplified decisive leadership and tactical initiative, playing a key role in the success of the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment during one of the most decisive armored battles of the Gulf War.
