Joseph Sartiano served as the commander of Ghost Troop (G Troop), 2nd Squadron, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment during Operation Desert Storm, where he led his unit in combat at the Battle of 73 Easting. Originally from San Francisco, California, Sartiano commanded one of the regiment’s forward reconnaissance and combat elements as it advanced into Iraq in February 1991.
During the Battle of 73 Easting on February 26, 1991, Sartiano’s troop operated on the northern flank of the regiment, securing key terrain and engaging Iraqi Republican Guard forces. His unit initially destroyed enemy armored personnel carriers and later fought dug-in Iraqi tank positions, including elements of the Tawakalna Division. Despite poor visibility caused by sandstorms and heavy resistance, Sartiano directed his troop in multiple engagements, countering enemy attacks and helping prevent Iraqi forces from maneuvering north or retreating through their sector.
