Took off from air station 404 in Chilbolton, Hampshire, UK as pilot of a P-47 Thunderbolt S/N 42-26325 on his 70th mission. Crashed in the forest 3kms from Vibraye due to poor weather and flak at 1430. The aircraft was completely destroyed and Smith was killed.
