Co-Pilot of B-17 �Hell�s Below� that took off from Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, UK on 29 May 1943 to bomb Rennes, France. The plane was shot down at 1634 by flak and German fighters. LT Downey survived the crash and was taken prisoner at Stalag Luft 7A in Moosburg, Bavaria. He was from Burlingame, California.
