SSgt Edward Kostecki, belly gunner of the B-17F 41-24478, took off from Thurleigh, Bedfordshire, UK on a bombing mission over St Nazaire’s submarine pens. Over the target area it was attacked by heavy flak and enemy fighters, forcing a lucky few crew members to bail out before the plane exploded in mid-air.
