Sgt John W. Schmidt, right waist gunner of the B-17 42-97998 “Roanoke Magician”, was shot by flak while on a raiding mission over Manheim. Returning from the raid with heavy damage, the crew got lost in the bad weather and crashed. The tail section was found where the monument now lays, hence its representation. Schmidt was wounded in the crash but recovered by Allied forces soon after.
