When Capt. George Covington Fugate was born on August 5, 1912, in Copiah, Mississippi, his father, Harry, was 31 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 30. He had two brothers and one sister. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Captain in the 142nd Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division. He entered service in Mississippi. He died on August 27, 1944 during the invasion of southern France. He is now buried at Hazlehurst Cemetery, Hazlehurst, Mississippi.
