When John E. Winschell was born on November 11, 1922, in Pennsylvania, his father, William, was 30 and his mother, Lucy, was 30. He had two brothers and three sisters. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II as a Second Lieutenant in the 86th Fighter Squadron, 79th Fighter Group. He enlisted in the service on August 26, 1942, in Pennsylvania. Pilot of the P-47 Thunderbolt, type D, which took off from Chabeuil on September 11, 1944, on an armed reconnaissance of the Rhone Valley. The plane collided in the dark with Lt. Fortune's P-47. He is now buried at Calvary Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, USA.
