When Ezra William Barrows was born on March 18, 1896, in Chandler, Minnesota, his father, Sylvanus, was 44 and his mother, Susan, was 36. He had three brothers and five sisters. He enlisted in Machine Gun Company, 2nd Infantry, North Dakota National Guard, at Dickinson, on July 14, 1917. Hew was then called into federal service, World War I, on July 15, 1917. He served in Machine Gun Company, 2nd Infantry, North Dakota National Guard (Machine Gun Company, 164th Infantry), until Jan. 9, 1918. He then served in Company C, 1st Brigade, Machine Gun Battalion, overseas from Dec. 15, 1917, to death. Engagements: Defensive Sectors: Ansauville (Lorraine); Cantigny (Picardy). Killed in action on May 7, 1918 and buried near Villers, Tournells, Somme, France. He was reburied at Lake Wilson, Minn.
