When Clarence L. Massey was born in July 1899 in Columbus, Georgia, his father, Lionell, was 22 and his mother, Mary, was 19. He had two sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company L, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was declared "Missing in Action" on May 24, 1918 and is commemorated on Tablets of the Missing, Somme American Cemetery, Bony, France.
