When Lawrence P. Petty was born in 1902 in South Carolina, his father, Thomas, was 45 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 38. He had three brothers and one sister. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company G, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 5, 1918 and is now buried in Browns Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, Pacolet Mills, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, USA.
