When Robert Santee was born in December 1896, his father, John, was 22 and his mother, Asa, was 20. He had five brothers and two sisters. He entered the military service in Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company D, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was declared "Missing in Action" on July 18, 1918 and is commemorated on Tablets of the Missing, Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, Belleau, France.
