When Samuel E. "Sammie" Mixon was born on June 7, 1887, in Georgia, his father, William, was 32 and his mother, Mary, was 24. He entered the service in the summer of 1917. He was then attached to Company H, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. After a brief period of training in local camps, Private Mixon embarked to overseas service in France, where he died on October 9, 1918, from pneumonia, after having been wounded in action. He is now buried in Beaver Dam Cemetery, Ray City, Berrien County, Georgia, USA.
