When Fred Emmet Hayes was born on January 1, 1891, in Ness City, Kansas, his father, Albert, was 36 and his mother, Mary, was 25. He had two brothers and three sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company K, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 18, 1918 at the age of 27 and is now buried in Old Sunnyside Cemetery, Sunnyside, Yakima County, Washington, USA.
