When Robert Albright Shank was born on December 24, 1893, in Arcanum, Ohio, his father, Ebbert, was 32 and his mother, Alta, was 25. He had two brothers and one sister. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company D, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died on October 10, 1918 at the age of 24 and is now buried in Abbottsville Cemetery, Abbottsville, Darke County, Ohio, USA. His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as PVT R A SHANDS.
