When Bert C. Kines was born in April 1896 in West Virginia, his father, Zachariah, was 39 and his mother, Amanda, was 35. He had two brothers and three sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company C, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was declared "Missing in Action" on July 20, 1918 and is commemorated on Tablets of the Missing, Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, Belleau, France.
