Frederic A. Gaw entered the military service in Wisconsin. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company A, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle but declared "Missing" on October 1, 1918 and is memorialized on Tablets of the Missing, Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, Belleau, France. His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as a Private.
