"David was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Hendrickson and was born in the Town of Blanchard on October 27, 1894 on his parents farm where he grew up to manhood. He was baptized in the Lutheran church here and renewed his faith in the Lutheran church in confirmation by Rev. Sletten June 7, 1908. He attended school at this place, completing two years of high school work. David was a talented violinist and had a knowledge of carpenter work and often worked at that trade but for the most part helped his father with the farm work.

When his call to service came he was ready and willing to answer his country's call. He left home Sunday, May 26, 1918 for Darlington where on the morning of May 27th he departed for Camp Grant. On June 14th he was transferred to Camp Custer, Michigan, where he became a member of Co. L. 337th Inf., 85th Division. He practiced with the Automatic Rifle Shooters and soon became very proficient as a good marksman.

On July 21st he sailed for overseas. The 85th Division was now used as a replacement organization and David was transferred into Co. C. 28th Infl. 1st Division, a regular army unit, and one that had seen severe fighting. The very fact that he was transferred into this division shows that his intensive training had fitted him for immediate service."
