When Jesse Joseph Cottrell was born on March 4, 1892, in Sunol, California, his father, Thomas, was 39 and his mother, Annie, was 36. He had five brothers and two sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company F, 1st Engineer Combat Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 20, 1918 at the age of 26 and is now buried in Saint Josephs Cemetery, Fremont, Alameda County, California, USA. His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as PVT J J COTTERLL.
