When Jabez Howland "Jabe" Toland was born on April 12, 1898, in Groveland, New York, his father, Herbert, was 26 and his mother, Lola, was 20. He had three brothers. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company C, 3rd Machine Gun Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action by a German bomb on July 18, 1918 at the age of 20 and is now buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Groveland, Livingston County, New York, USA.
