Clarence was the son of Hans Martin and Andrea Johnson, both born Norway. His parents died when he was young. He entered the military service in Montana. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company C, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 19, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France. He also has a cenotaph in Victory Memorial Drive, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, USA. His photo is his cenotaph.
