When Raymond Andrew Sutphin was born on September 28, 1895, in Greene, Tennessee, his father, John, was 27 and his mother, Laura, was 21. He had four brothers and two sisters. The family moved to Grant County, Indiana in February 1902. He enlisted in the Army on May 7, 1917 at Martion, Indiana. He was sent to Fort Thomas, Kentucky and then transferred to Camp Syracuse, New York. Embarked overseas in November 1917, he was assigned to Company D, 16th Infantry, 1st Division. He died on August 1, 1918 in Base Hospital No. 20 from wounds received in action. He was initially buried in Military Cemetery of Base Hospital No. 20 near Soissons and is now buried in Park Cemetery, Fairmount, Grant County, Indiana, USA.
