When Willis Edwin Comfort was born on January 27, 1892, in Westmoreland, Kansas, his father, Lue, was 22 and his mother, Jennie, was 24. He had one brother and two sisters. He graduated in Engineering at Kansas State University. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Captain in Company F, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 18, 1918, at the age of 26, in Picardie, France and is now buried in Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan, Riley County, Kansas, USA.

His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument in France as CAPT W F COMFORT. A plaque is also dedicated for him located in Governors Island Memorial Plaques, Governors Island, New York County (Manhattan), New York. The second plaque is in remembrance of those who gave their lives in World War I in a College Memorial Stadium in Kansas State Agricultural College, Manhattan, KS.
