When William S. "Willie" Gardner was born in January 1897 in North Carolina, his father, John, was 31 and his mother, Minnie, was 22. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company G, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 29, 1918 at the age of 21 and is now buried in Knowles Family Cemetery, Rose Hill, Duplin County, North Carolina, USA.
