When John Sherman Horton was born in November 1899 in Virginia, his father, Jacob, was 27 and his mother, Cora, was 22. He had three brothers and three sisters. Sherman was also a charter member of the Crab Orchard Baptist Church. He never married or had children. He entered the military service in West Virginia. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company H, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 20, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France.
