When Joy W. Dillavou was born on June 9, 1893, his father, George, was 42, and his mother, Charlotte, was 40. He had four brothers and four sisters. He entered the military service in Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Mechanic in Company I, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action but declared "Missing" on July 19, 1918 and is memorialized on Tablets of the Missing, Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, Belleau, France. His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as PVT R W DILAVOU.
