When Thomas R. Frith was born in July 1892 in Tennessee, his father, John, was 21 and his mother, Annie, was 20. He had four brothers. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company I, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action but declared "Missing" on July 19, 1918 and is memorialized on Tablets of the Missing, Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, Belleau, France. His name is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as a Private.
