When Clair Otis Lewiston was born on April 10, 1898, in Merrillan, Wisconsin, his father, Andrew, was 29 and his mother, Mathilda, was 26. He had three brothers and two sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company I, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action but declared "Missing" on July 19, 1918 and is memorialized on Tablets of the Missing, Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, Belleau, France.
