When Patrick McHugh was born on April 27, 1887, in Bellavary, Mayo, Ireland, his father, Michael, was 36 and his mother, Mary, was 34. He had three brothers and six sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company M, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died on July 18, 1919, in Soissons, Côte-d'Or, France, at the age of 32, and was buried in Queens, New York.
