When Maynard Ames Wells was born in December 1873 in Floyd, Virginia, his father, Archibald, was 26 and his mother, Sarah, was 23. He married Clara Rossy on November 2, 1911, in San Antonio, Texas. They had two children during their marriage. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Major in the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died on July 27, 1918 and is now buried in Aisne-Marne American Cem., Belleau, France.
