When Hilary F. McClure was born in March 1896 in Waynesville, North Carolina, his father, John, was 28 and his mother, Margarett, was 24. He had three brothers and four sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company I, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 18, 1918 and is now buried in Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, Seringes-et- Nesles, France.
