When Harry J. Madsen was born on April 5, 1890, in St Paul, Minnesota, his father, Hans, was 34 and his mother, Anna, was 40. He had one brother. He entered the military service in North Dakota. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company I, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on July 19, 1918 and is now buried in Aisne-Marne American Cem., Belleau, France. His surname is inscribed on the Buzancy monument as Madson.
