                            Born on October 24, 1919, in Comfort, Texas, William Dietel Jr. volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. He was killed when his B-17F "Flying Fortress," named "Sky Queen," of which he was the pilot, was shot down over Opende in The Netherlands while returning from a mission over Kassel, Germany, where there was an airplane factory. He flew a total of eight combat missions; his last targeted an aircraft engine factory.
