Born in Ocilla, Georgia, on July, 25, 1922, Wyman Martin graduated from high school in 1941 and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. He graduated from gunnery school in Utah before deploying to England. Martin was serving as the Tail Gunner of the B-17F "Flying Fortress" known as "Sky Queen" when it encountered enemy fire over The Netherlands and crashed near the town of Opende. He and the rest of the crew were returning from a mission over Kassel Germany where there was an airplane factory. He is buried alongside three of his fellow crew members.
